TV and media units in Farringdon
Hiding the cables is often the main aim. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. The routes are ours, while any wiring is for your electrician. If your home has speakers muffled behind doors and a tangle of wires behind the TV, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Farringdon, from mansion blocks to modern developments. In a mansion block flat, the living room may still have a chimney breast and alcoves, and walls that are far from flat, whereas a modern flat tends to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan layout. TV and media units are designed for whichever you have.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What it costs
To work out the quote, we look at:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The width and height of the space
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
What to send when you get in touch
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- What the furniture needs to hold
To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Common questions about TV and media units
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Farringdon station?
Yes, homes across Islington and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Does a conservation area in or near Farringdon affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
We plan the route in during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?
If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position and the cable route behind it. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket so we check the wall at the measuring visit.
Can you add sockets behind the TV?
That is a job for your electrician. It’s best done before the unit goes in, and we plan cut-outs and cable routes around the sockets.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.
From workshop to your room
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: TV and media units are made in sections sized for each of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.
- It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
- A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Before fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Empty the space we will be working in

The problems TV and media units solve
The most common reason is a mess of wires. Leads trail from the TV to the boxes, the sockets and the speakers and nothing off the shelf hides them all. Built-in units give cables somewhere to go.
People usually get in touch with us about needs like these:
- Leads that show from every angle
- Boxes and consoles on the floor
- Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
- Boxes with no ventilation
Near listed buildings like Priory Church of St John of Jerusalem, less than half a mile north of the centre of Farringdon, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
What TV and media units cannot fix
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Structural changes to the wall
- Painting the walls and ceiling
- Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bought units come in the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose. Standalone furniture takes up floor without using the height of the room. Fitted furniture can go to the ceiling and fill a recess exactly.
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
