TV and media units in Clerkenwell

Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall, like behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That’s work for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. Ideally it’s done before the unit goes in, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. We make TV and media units from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about equipment with nowhere proper to go and bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room.

Getting long pieces into a flat often takes the most planning. Since most households around Clerkenwell live in purpose-built flats, the sections for TV and media units are planned at the design visit, sized for the tightest point on the way in. Joins are positioned so they’re hidden once everything is in place.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

An off-the-shelf TV stand is cheaper and quick to buy. It is also easy to replace a stand when your equipment changes, which is a fair point in its favour. Bespoke units are made for one wall and the things you use. Standard furniture doesn’t allow for boxed-in pipes, risers or meter cupboards, leaving gaps or blocking access. Fitted furniture is built around them.

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

What affects the price in Clerkenwell

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Helping us understand the room

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • How you want to use the space
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

Your questions about TV and media units in Clerkenwell

I live in a flat in Clerkenwell. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Is Clerkenwell in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, Clerkenwell is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Islington and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

The time on site depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Before and after fitting day

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
  • Check where the seating will go
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow

Clean the paintwork with a soft cloth that is barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, which can mark the finish.

Avoid piling devices on one shelf, as they trap each other’s heat. Each one needs space around it.

Fitting day, step by step

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it’s sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. A written quote follows for the unit.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

Living-room carpentry in Clerkenwell: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 32% of the housing in the streets around Clerkenwell, with about 28% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 19 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Clerkenwell. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 75% of households in the streets around Clerkenwell live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Dr Johnson's House, about 0.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Near listed buildings like Priory Church of St John of Jerusalem, under half a mile south of the centre of Clerkenwell, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For a family home near St Peter and St Paul RC Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.
