Under-stairs storage in Aperfield, Bromley

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make under-stairs storage for homes in Aperfield, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Storage that does not match the hallway
  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

Under-stairs storage for homes in Aperfield

Each under-stairs cupboard is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes that carry weight, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Aperfield and fitted. If you are living with the low end of the space going to waste and a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out, under-stairs cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Aperfield, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille where there’s a radiator underneath. Each space is measured and under-stairs cupboards are made to suit it.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors and drawer fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Their edges are cut to follow the angle of the stairs, so the gaps stay even all the way along.

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted to match.

Honest limits

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Aperfield

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Aperfield?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

I live near Oxted station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

Many designs use both. Drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space, and a cupboard at the tall end handles taller things. We will suggest a layout when we visit.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. You choose the colour, and we agree it before the work starts. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.

From workshop to your room

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. We size each drawer for what it will carry. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.

Storage in Aperfield homes: local notes

About 29% of the homes in the streets around Aperfield went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 25% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Aperfield include St Mark's Church (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home in Aperfield is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live in a flat close to Oxted station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Down House, about 1.7 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. For a family home near Biggin Hill Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.
