Made-to-measure kitchens in Aperfield

About 29% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Aperfield went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 25% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Aperfield, Historic England’s list includes St Mark's Church (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 76% of households in the streets around Aperfield, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Down House, about 1.7 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. If your children go to Biggin Hill Primary School or a school nearby, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen.

Aperfield is within the London Borough of Bromley, about 6 miles north-east of Orpington. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Aperfield is part of that. We cover places right across Bromley, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Bespoke kitchens in Aperfield: what you get

Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. People usually come to us about a kitchen that fits an uneven room and a kitchen finished in your colours; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Aperfield, walls tend to be truer than in older houses, though nothing is assumed. Cabinets are scribed where needed and levelled on site. Gas work is for a Gas Safe engineer, and the plumbing and electrics are for your plumber and electrician.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the kitchen we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You let us know about the room and how you use it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Getting a quote

To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Questions we are often asked

I live near Oxted station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Aperfield?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

How long will the kitchen take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

How are bespoke kitchens priced?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Every kitchen is different, so we price it after the design visit. To get started, message us from the contact page.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you.

Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?

We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. It helps to choose them before the design is final, and your quote sets out what’s included.

What prompts bespoke kitchens in Aperfield

Often the call comes after building work has opened up the space. A new room needs a kitchen planned for its shape and light, and building work itself is for your builder.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A dresser that suits a period house
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
  • Tall larder storage
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls

If you live in a flat close to Oxted station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.

Is bespoke worth it?

A bespoke kitchen takes more planning than picking units from a range. In return, the storage, layout and finish are designed for you. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
