Under-Stairs Storage in Crouch End

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make under-stairs storage for homes in Crouch End, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Storage that doesn’t match the hallway
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach

Need under-stairs storage in Crouch End?

Questions we are often asked

My home in Crouch End is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Crouch End?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

How do I get a quote for under-stairs storage in Crouch End?

The first step is to tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent.

Under-stairs storage in Crouch End: what you get

We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. The finish is sprayed or hand-painted, and then the storage is fitted in your home in Crouch End. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Crouch End, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

What it’s made from

Pull-out drawers

A tall pull-out drawer can hold coats on a rail or a vacuum cleaner standing up. Shorter drawers lower down suit shoes and bags. The design visit is where we agree the mix.

Plinths and scribe strips

The floor under a staircase is rarely perfectly level. A plinth or adjustable feet let us set the storage level, so the doors and drawers run true.

When you need someone else

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Crouch End

After a hallway is redecorated, an old, tired cupboard under the stairs can stand out. New storage, painted in a colour chosen for the hall, can tie it together. Decorating is for your decorator, so it is useful to tell us your plans early.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show

If you live near Priory Park, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Pricing under-stairs storage in Crouch End

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote.

What to send when you get in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.
