Fitted cupboards in Crouch End

About our fitted cupboards in Crouch End

A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. Tall cupboards can take the vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning things, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Plumbing is for your plumber and new sockets for your electrician, so we plan the cupboards around their work. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are boxing in a boiler with room for servicing and a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes.

A large share of the homes around Crouch End were built before 1919, and older houses have plenty of odd corners: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, made to follow walls that are seldom true.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Making use of tricky spaces in Crouch End

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Crouch End were built before 1919 (about 56%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List records 12 entries within half a mile of the centre of Crouch End. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 31% of households in the neighbourhood around Crouch End, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

Living in a block of flats near Crouch Hill station? Then fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Witanhurst, about 1.5 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. For families living near Rokesly Infant & Nursery School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

What fitted cupboards can’t fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Any gas work around the boiler
  • Electrical work inside the cupboard
  • Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Ventilated doors
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Could you do it yourself?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Crouch End

I live in a flat in Crouch End. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

I live near Crouch Hill station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Haringey and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What are the cupboards made of?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in the colour agreed with you.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so fitted cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Ask for a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Practical tips

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Leave room in front of the meters
  • Measure the route into the room not just the room

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can typically be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that cleans easily with a soft cloth. Keep a note of the paint colour for later.

Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board in the space early. They shape the design, and planning around them is much easier than changing things later.
