Under-Stairs Storage in Tottenham Green

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make under-stairs storage for homes in Tottenham Green, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach
  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so it helps to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. First you tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
  2. At the design visit we measure under the stairs and plan the drawers and doors with you, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs.
  5. The storage is fitted in your home and checked, drawer by drawer. Any meters stay easy to reach.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

Advice

Under-stairs storage for homes in Tottenham Green

Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. Our designs keep a clear way to them, often behind their own door, so you gain storage without losing access. At the design visit in Tottenham Green, we note what’s there and design around it. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board and a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. With a large share of the homes around Tottenham Green built before 1919, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house, and painted to match. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
  • Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Plan decorating around the fitting

Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is usually all they need. Avoid scourers and harsh chemicals, and dry the surface after wiping. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening a screw early stops a small looseness becoming a problem. If a drawer stops running smoothly, tell us about the room on our contact form and describe it.

Honest limits

Not everything around under-stairs storage is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician

Under-stairs storage in Tottenham Green: local notes

About 47% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Tottenham Green went up before 1919, and about 19% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 11 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Tottenham Green. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Haringey sets its own rules. If your street in Tottenham Green is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. Tell us what the parking is like at the measuring visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Parish Church of St Ann, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Bruce Castle, about 0.9 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. For a family home near Earlsmead Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Pricing under-stairs storage in Tottenham Green

Several things affect the price:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The internal fittings
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Do you cover homes near Seven Sisters station?

Yes. We cover all of Haringey and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How much does under-stairs storage cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, walls and floors are seldom straight. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers that pull out make the back of the space easy to use. Everything is in view when the drawer is open. They can hold shoes, the vacuum or cleaning things.
