Common questions about under-stairs storage

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Seven Sisters?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Seven Sisters?

Yes, we work across Haringey, Seven Sisters included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. It is common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. We note them during the design visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. We don’t move meters, so the storage works around their current position.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

It depends on the shape of the space and what you want to store. Drawers make the low end useful, because you pull the back of the space to you. At the tall end, a cupboard is often better for coats and the vacuum.

What happens at the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Seven Sisters

Under-stairs storage is not only for houses. A maisonette, a split-level flat or a staircase down to a lower floor can all leave space underneath. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections made in our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. Wherever your home is in Seven Sisters, the process is the same. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter and nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace normally has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. Around Seven Sisters, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Advice

Under-stairs storage in Seven Sisters: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Seven Sisters were built before 1919 (about 54%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 8 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Seven Sisters. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 21% of households in the area around Seven Sisters, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Period walls are rarely flat, and floors are often out of level. Standard units show the gaps, and filler strips can only hide so much. We scribe each under-stairs cupboard to follow the walls and the stairs, and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.

Tips worth knowing

These points come up often when people plan under-stairs storage. They help before and after fitting:

  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
  • Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
  • Count the coats and pairs of shoes in daily use

Before we leave, we check every drawer and door with you. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. You will know everything works as planned.

Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Store tools in a box or bag, not loose against the doors. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

What we don’t do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • Changing where a meter sits, which isn’t carpentry
