Fitted wardrobes across N4: what to expect
Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, keeping long hanging where there’s height and drawers or shelves lower down. Space that is hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. Typical reasons to get in touch are clothes with nowhere proper to go and space under the eaves going to waste; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You send us some details about the room and the storage you need, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
- We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling.
What goes into your quote
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Homes across N4 and their bedrooms
Homes across N4, Holloway, Nag's Head and Stoke Newington among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them.
The biggest shares of homes in N4 were built before 1919 (about 57%) and since 2000 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. About 57% of homes in the N4 postcode district were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 30% of households in N4, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so we look at both at the measuring visit.
Finsbury Park: If your children go to Stroud Green Primary School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live in a period home close to St John the Evangelist, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start.
What to check before you book
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
Flats, conversions and lettings
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
What it costs
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The internal fittings
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
What we need to know
A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- What the furniture needs to hold
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.
What it is made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It’s a sensible choice against a colder external wall.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.
Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in N4
Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
- A bedroom that never feels tidy
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in N4
What are your fitted wardrobes made from?
We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. The materials are named in your written quote.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?
It is common, and it is allowed for. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls, so the doors line up properly.
Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that’s hard to furnish.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.
Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?
Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift, and the wardrobe is put together in the room. Let us know if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.
