Fitted wardrobes across N8: what to expect
Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you during the design visit. Most enquiries start with clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.
What goes into your quote
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

Getting a quote
To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.
Local landmarks in Crouch End
In Crouch End, that includes homes near Rokesly Infant & Nursery School, Asanté Academy of Chinese Medicine and Christ Church, among other places. You will also find Hornsey School for Girls (close by, under half a mile east), Priory Park (within half a mile north) and Queens pub (a few minutes’ walk north-east). Crouch End’s nearest station is Crouch Hill station, about 0.7 miles south-east. A little further out are Arsenal Football Club Museum (1.7 miles south-east) and The Mall Wood Green (1.2 miles north-east). Green spaces nearby include Highgate Hill and Parkland Walk.
Fitted wardrobes for homes across N8
Across N8, including Noel Park, Wood Green and Crouch End, bedrooms come in every size. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. The inside layout is planned around your things.
The biggest shares of homes in N8 were built before 1919 (about 63%) and since 2000 (about 12%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 63% of homes in N8 were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. About 28% of households in N8 live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in N8, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.
Crouch End: For a flat near Crouch Hill station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your children go to Rokesly Infant & Nursery School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
Pricing fitted wardrobes in N8
To work out the quote, we look at:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- How square the room is
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.
What we need to know
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
When you need someone else
Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we do not do:
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
- Decorating or plastering the room
Is bespoke worth it?
Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling.
Before you hire any carpenter
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Real projects you can actually look at
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
What it is made from
Hanging rails
Long rails need support so they do not bend under heavy coats. Rail lengths are planned so they stay straight.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, so it’s a good choice for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.
Questions we are often asked
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent.
Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?
We plan it with you at the measuring visit, starting from the clothes you have. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.
Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that’s hard to furnish.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.
Is it possible to have storage over the bed?
Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense. We’ll look at the room with you at the design visit.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
