  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board

Under-stairs storage for your home in South Tottenham

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. Each one is sized for what it will hold, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.

Under-stairs storage in South Tottenham

In many terraced houses, the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board sits under the stairs. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. Our designs keep a clear way to them, often behind their own door, so the space works hard without hiding anything that matters. If you’re not sure what’s under your stairs in South Tottenham, we will look when we visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are a hallway crowded with coats and shoes and nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. That matters around South Tottenham, where a large share of the homes are that old. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Questions from South Tottenham

How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in South Tottenham?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Under-stairs cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

My home in South Tottenham is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What happens at the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

How do I get started?

Simply get in touch through our contact form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and we will arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Parking near your home
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The internal fittings

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.

What to send when you contact us

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

The drawers under a staircase can carry a real load. Birch plywood suits them, as it’s strong and holds screws well. It also suits longer shelves.

Moisture-resistant MDF

With wet shoes and coats coming in, a moisture-resistant grade of MDF is a sensible choice. It takes a spray-painted or hand-painted finish well, and it holds its shape in the space under the stairs.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts when you contact us about the space under your stairs. It is useful to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the space, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed. Take your time to look through it.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes.

Before fitting day

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Arranging a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Storage in South Tottenham homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around South Tottenham were built before 1919 (about 46%) and since 2000 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The centre of South Tottenham is within about a quarter of a mile of the Seven Sisters and Page Green, Tottenham High Road Hist Corr Conservation Area. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Haringey included. Vans bringing furniture to South Tottenham fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access during the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Ann, about 0.5 miles west of the centre of South Tottenham, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Chestnuts Park, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For an older house near Church of Holy Trinity, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.
