How we make under-stairs storage for Cubitt Town

Every staircase has its own shape. The underside slopes, the side of the stairs runs at its own angle and the floor below is rarely perfectly level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. That’s something a standard unit can’t do, in Cubitt Town or anywhere else. If you’re living with a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and cleaning things with no proper home, under-stairs cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Newer homes often have plain spaces left as they are: a recess beside the stairs, a gap by a window, an empty cupboard. Around Cubitt Town, many homes were built since 2000, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. The layout inside is planned to use the full depth.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. Drawer boxes and carcasses that take a load are often made from it. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels of an under-stairs cupboard, where the finish is most on show.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Cubitt Town

Do you cover homes near Canary Wharf station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Cubitt Town?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. The storage is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it looks like part of the house.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it helps to let us know at the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

How to prepare

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

How to get a quote

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, get in touch through our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Advice

Storage in Cubitt Town homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Cubitt Town were built since 2000 (about 67%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 17%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 14 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Cubitt Town. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. More than half of the homes in the area around Cubitt Town (about 67%) were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are usually plasterboard on studs, so the fixings for under-stairs cupboards are chosen for the board.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 1.1 miles south. If your own home is a period one, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. If your children go to Cubitt Town Infants' School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The width and height of the space
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

What we need to know

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and let us know which room you have in mind. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Why bespoke in Cubitt Town?

Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. Standard units show the gaps, and filler strips can only hide so much. We scribe each under-stairs cupboard to follow the walls and the stairs, and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often does not get them. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board, and heavy pieces can stand on the floor.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, then set it out in the quote.
