Fitted storage in Whitechapel
In the streets around Whitechapel, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. 36 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Whitechapel. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Purpose-built flats are home to about 80% of households in the area around Whitechapel, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
Close to Finsbury Circus? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Near listed buildings like Church of St Botolph, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Whitechapel, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live in a period home close to St Mary Matfelon, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

About our under-stairs storage in Whitechapel
Some under-stairs spaces are open enough for a small desk. A built-in desk with shelving and drawers can turn the space into a quiet corner for paperwork. Any new socket or light there is for your electrician, and we leave room and a route for the cable. We will look at whether it suits your stairs when we visit in Whitechapel. If your home has a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and a low corner too deep to reach into, under-stairs cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Many homes around Whitechapel were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are flats with compact layouts. Where a boiler or cylinder sits in a cupboard, the design keeps the clearances its maker sets out. Shallow cupboards suit narrow halls.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

What affects the price in Whitechapel
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The number of doors and drawers
- The overall size of the piece
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.
Helping us understand the room
These details help when you contact us:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Where you live, with the postcode
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- How you want to use the space
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Questions from Whitechapel
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Whitechapel?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Whitechapel station?
Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?
Yes. It is common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. We don’t move meters, so the storage works around their current position.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?
How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We know the hall is a busy route, so we keep it as clear as possible.
Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?
The answer depends on your stairs and what you will keep there. Drawers make the low end useful, because you pull the back of the space to you. At the tall end, a cupboard is often better for coats and the vacuum.
Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
Walls are rarely flat and floors rarely level, in older homes particularly. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish works well on plain and panelled fronts. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.
How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.
- It starts when you contact us with some details about the space, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
- At the design visit we measure under the stairs and plan the drawers and doors with you, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
- You receive a quote in writing for the storage we’ve discussed.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are made in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.
Before fitting day
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Advice
Flats, conversions and lettings
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.
