Tower Hill Under-Stairs Storage

Thinking about under-stairs storage in Tower Hill? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

What we don’t do

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances
  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

Under-stairs storage for homes in Tower Hill

No two staircases are quite the same. The underside slopes, the side of the stairs runs at its own angle and the floor below is rarely perfectly level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. It’s the part of the job a boxed unit simply can’t manage. If your home has open space under the stairs that collects clutter and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Around Tower Hill, many homes were built since 2000, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Tower Hill in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes, Tower Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

I live in a flat in Tower Hill. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How do I get started?

Simply fill in our short enquiry form. It’s useful to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Do you need under-stairs storage in Tower Hill?

After a hallway is redecorated, an old, tired cupboard under the stairs can stand out. New storage, painted in a colour chosen for the hall, can tie it together. If decorating is planned, it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit so the work can be timed sensibly.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Storage that doesn’t match the hallway
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Chapel of St Peter Ad Vincula, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. You let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards, because they must stay accessible.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

How to get a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, almost like a factory finish. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.

Birch plywood

The drawers under a staircase can carry a real load. Birch plywood suits them, as it’s strong and holds screws well. It also suits longer shelves.

Storage in Tower Hill homes: local notes

In the streets around Tower Hill, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 49%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 23%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 30 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Tower Hill. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning, especially for larger pieces.

Mansion House, about 0.6 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Peter ad Vincula, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Tower Hill is part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, about 1 mile north-east of Whitechapel. Wherever you are in Tower Hill, it works the same way: a design visit, a written quote, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. Tower Hill is one of 31 places on our list for Tower Hamlets.

Streets in the area include Bush Lane, Swan Lane and Mark Lane, and homes on each of them are within our area for under-stairs storage. Tower Hill sits close to the A3 and A10. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. If you are just outside Tower Hill, we also cover Aldgate (1 mile north), Bishopsgate (1 mile north), Spitalfields (1 mile north), Whitechapel (1 mile north-east) and St George in the East (1 mile east). Other parts of Tower Hamlets we cover include Bethnal Green (2 miles north-east), Cambridge Heath (2 miles north-east), Mile End (2 miles north-east), Bow Common (2 miles east), Bromley (3 miles north-east) and Limehouse (2 miles east).
