Under-stairs storage in North Greenwich

Why bespoke in North Greenwich?

A standard unit knows nothing about your meter or fuse board. Put in the wrong place, it can block the access meter readers and engineers need. A design made for the space keeps them in clear reach from the start. Off-the-shelf depths can crowd a compact new-build room, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It still uses the full height.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Under-stairs storage in North Greenwich: what you get

Where the space under the stairs opens onto a room, a compact desk can fit beneath it. A built-in desk with shelving and drawers can turn the space into a quiet corner for paperwork. If you’d like a socket or a light, your electrician fits it and we plan the furniture around it. We will look at whether it suits your stairs when we visit in North Greenwich. If your home has an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large number of homes around North Greenwich date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer developments. Where a boiler or cylinder sits in a cupboard, the design keeps the clearances its maker sets out. Cupboards can be shallow where space is tight, so the hallway still feels open.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

What it costs

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How big the furniture is

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Under-stairs storage for homes in North Greenwich

England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.

Living in a block of flats near Greenwich station? Then under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Near listed buildings like Church of St Nicholas, about 0.5 miles south of the centre of North Greenwich, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in North Greenwich

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in North Greenwich?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Do you cover homes near Greenwich station?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.

Arranging a design visit

Advice

Looking after your furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Look for meters, a fuse board or pipes before we visit
  • Empty the cupboard so we can measure every corner
  • Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the fronts clean. Avoid scourers and harsh chemicals, and dry the surface after wiping. The edges of drawers and the areas around handles pick up marks first.

Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. Let them dry before they go away, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.

What prompts under-stairs storage in North Greenwich

With more people working from home, some want a desk tucked under the stairs. Where the space is open to a room, a built-in desk with shelves can fit there neatly. It won’t replace a full home office, but it suits paperwork and a laptop.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go

If you live near Mudchute Park and Farm, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
