Under-Stairs Storage in Westcombe Park
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make under-stairs storage for homes in Westcombe Park, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A fuse board that is hard to get to
- Cleaning things with no proper home
- Open space under the stairs that collects clutter

Under-stairs storage in Westcombe Park
Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. We plan the storage around them, usually with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so you gain storage without losing access. At the design visit in Westcombe Park, we note what’s there and design around it. People usually come to us about struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter and a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Newer homes often have plain spaces left as they are: a recess beside the stairs, a gap by a window, an empty cupboard. Many homes around Westcombe Park date from 2000 onwards, so spaces like that are worth a second look. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf storage comes in the colours the maker offers. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the hall, the stairs or the woodwork. In a compact new-build room, standard sizes rarely fit the walls exactly, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Making use of tricky spaces in Westcombe Park
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Westcombe Park were built before 1919 (about 37%) and since 2000 (about 37%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Westcombe Park, Historic England’s list includes East Greenwich Library (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Church of St John the Evangelist (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your street in Westcombe Park joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
If you live in a flat close to Westcombe Park station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For a family home near Halstow Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Before and after fitting day
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
- Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
- Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
- Note the size of anything tall you want to store
When we’ve finished fitting, the drawers and doors are ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.
Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. A quick sort every so often stops drawers getting too heavy. Wipe up any spills, especially near the floor, before they dry.
Is it time for under-stairs storage?
When a home is short on storage, the space under the stairs is too useful to waste. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It also takes pressure off the other cupboards in the house.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
- A fuse board that’s hard to get to
- Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
- A low corner too deep to reach into
The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1 mile west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- How doors and drawers are fitted
What under-stairs storage cannot fix
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
- Any work on gas pipes or appliances
- Changing where a meter sits, which is not carpentry
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

From workshop to your room
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber.
- First you tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them.
- We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and go through the design.
- You receive a quote in writing for the storage we have discussed, for you to read through.
- We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs.
- We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.
Before fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
How to get a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.
Advice
Your questions about under-stairs storage in Westcombe Park
Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Westcombe Park?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is Westcombe Park in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes. Westcombe Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Greenwich and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.
Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?
Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. We do not move meters, so the storage works around their current position.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Birch plywood holds screws well, which matters for drawers that carry weight. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?
Yes. The storage is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you. It can match the walls, the stairs or the woodwork, so it looks like part of the house.
