How we make built-in bookshelves for Cubitt Town

Shelving can frame a door or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelves packed two rows deep and bookcases that lean or wobble.

Open-plan living is usual in homes built since 2000, and many homes around Cubitt Town were built in that time. In a room like that, built-in bookshelves can help separate the sitting area from the kitchen. Floors are protected throughout, as newer finishes mark easily.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it’s useful to let us know at the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
  3. You get a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Cubitt Town

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • The width and height of the space
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The number of doors and drawers

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

Getting in touch

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • How you want to use the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Mention anything very heavy, such as records or large art books
  • Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting

Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, lift books onto the shelves rather than pushing them across, to avoid marking the new finish.

Use mats under plants and vases on painted shelves so spills don’t mark the paint. Dry any spills quickly.

Questions from Cubitt Town

My home in Cubitt Town is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you cover homes near Canary Wharf station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Cubitt Town?

Just message us from the contact page. It helps to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones. We plan depths around your collection during the design visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

For cupboard doors below the shelves, MDF gives a flat, stable door. There’s no grain to show through the paint.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the bookcase and takes up an uneven floor. Its height can match the skirting board.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Cubitt Town homes and built-in bookshelves

About 67% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Cubitt Town went up since 2000, and about 17% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 14 entries within half a mile of the centre of Cubitt Town. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. So a van fitting furniture in Cubitt Town usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension arranged through the council. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Christ Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For families living near Cubitt Town Infants' School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
