Under-Stairs Storage in Eel Pie Island

For homes in Eel Pie Island, we make under-stairs storage from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Each piece is finished by spray or by hand, in the colour you choose.

  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach
  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter

How we make under-stairs storage for Eel Pie Island

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter.

In an older home, panelled doors and painted mouldings may suit; in a newer one, plain flat doors may fit better. For a home in Eel Pie Island, door styles are talked through at the measuring visit. The paint colour is agreed with you, whichever finish you pick.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made units are designed for shipping and quick assembly. Ours is designed for one staircase and made in our workshop to suit it, using birch plywood for strong drawer boxes and moisture-resistant MDF for painted fronts. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. Recesses, sloping ceilings and tricky corners are where ready-made furniture struggles most, and most homes have one somewhere. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What you get with us

What affects the price in Eel Pie Island

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Your postcode and the borough

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Eel Pie Island?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What happens at the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. It’s common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. We note them during the design visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. Moving a meter isn’t our work, so we design for where it is now.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.

Where other trades come in

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Under-stairs storage in Eel Pie Island: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Eel Pie Island, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 32%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Eel Pie Island, Historic England’s list includes Ham House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles east, and Marble Hill House (Grade I), about 0.6 miles north-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Terraced houses are home to about 30% of households in the area around Eel Pie Island, based on Census 2021. In a terraced house, the space under the stairs often holds the meters or the fuse board, so storage is designed to keep them reachable.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. If you live near Marble Hill Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. For a flat near Twickenham station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Fitting day, step by step

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. Either way, the day is planned during the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts with some details from you about the space.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you’ll use the space.
  3. We send a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
