Bespoke kitchens in Eel Pie Island: local notes

About 32% of the homes in the area around Eel Pie Island went up before 1919, and about 27% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. There are 77 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Eel Pie Island. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Richmond upon Thames is no exception. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Close to Marble Hill Park? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. For a family home near St Mary's Church of England Primary School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. The wider area includes historic houses such as Richmond House, about 0.2 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Bespoke kitchens in Eel Pie Island

A bespoke kitchen is built around the room you have. Each cabinet is made to the real measurements of your walls, floor and ceiling, so the runs fit neatly from wall to wall. The layout, storage and finish are planned with you, and the kitchen is made in our workshop before it is fitted. If you are living with a dresser that suits a period house and cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls, that’s what kitchens are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Wherever your home in Eel Pie Island sits in London’s mix of housing, a bespoke kitchen starts with measuring the room. The worktop, sink and appliances you choose are built into the design. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Before fitting day, we check the route in along with the room itself, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the kitchen you want.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the layout and the finish, spray-painted or hand-painted.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which suits kitchens and takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied on site and is easy to touch up later.
  6. Treat new paint gently while it cures; the plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your own plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.

Before we arrive

How it is made

Larder and dresser units

They’re a good way to use an alcove or the end of a wall.

Plinths and scribe strips

In a period kitchen, where nothing is quite level, plinths and scribe strips do a lot of quiet work.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made cabinets often have chipboard carcasses. Ours are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray or hand painted, finished to suit the room. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a recess, a slope or an odd corner, and most homes have one somewhere. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Why choose us

  • Designed for the room you have
  • Over 300 projects completed
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement

Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf or how to compare quotes.

What it costs

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Parking near your home
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing. To start, message us from the contact page.

Helping us understand the room

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Examples of the look you’re after

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Where other trades come in

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Painting the walls around the kitchen
  • Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers
  • Knocking through or rebuilding walls

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Islands where space allows
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Questions from Eel Pie Island

Do you cover homes near Twickenham station?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Eel Pie Island?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London, and Eel Pie Island is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can you fit cabinets to walls that are not straight?

Yes, that is part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so we scribe and level every cabinet.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It is made in sections. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.
