Under-stairs storage in Twickenham, Richmond upon Thames

Under-stairs storage in Twickenham

About our under-stairs storage in Twickenham

Every staircase has its own shape. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. That is something a standard unit can’t do, in Twickenham or anywhere else. If you’re living with nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Homes in an area like Twickenham can come from many different periods, so the tricky spaces vary too: a bay, the space under the stairs, a hallway recess or the eaves of a converted loft. The furniture is made for the space as it is. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay accessible.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You tell us about the space under the stairs.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you’ll use the space.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Structural changes to the staircase itself

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Spray-painted finish

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Count the coats and pairs of shoes in daily use
  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes

If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Masking tape can lift fresh paint, so it shouldn’t go on the new finish. If anything isn’t right, message us from the contact page and we’ll talk it through.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose handle is easy to tighten before it works its way out. If a door drops or a drawer starts to catch, get in touch through our contact form and tell us what’s happening.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Twickenham

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Twickenham station?

Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Twickenham?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?

How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, often with a door of its own. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

The problems under-stairs storage solve

Others are looking for a small place to work. If the space opens onto a room, a compact desk with shelves above can sit beneath the stairs. It will not replace a full home office, but it suits paperwork and a laptop.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach

Near listed buildings like Church of All Hallows, about 0.5 miles north-east of the centre of Twickenham, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
