Kew Under-Stairs Storage
Pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs, for homes in Kew. We measure, design and quote first, then make it in our workshop and fit it.
- A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
- No room for a small desk or a place to work
- A staircase with untidy space beneath it
Under-stairs storage designed for your room
Under-stairs storage in Kew: what you get
We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. The finish is sprayed or hand-painted, and then the storage is fitted in your home in Kew. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a staircase with untidy space beneath it and nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board.
A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. That matters around Kew, where a large share of the homes are that old. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What happens on fitting day
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
- We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
- You receive a quote in writing for the storage.
- We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
- The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.
Preparing the room
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Ask for a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

When is bespoke worth it?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
What affects the price in Kew
What you pay depends on:
- The internal fittings
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- The overall size of the piece
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.
What we need to know
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- How you want to use the space
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Before and after fitting day
These points come up often when people plan under-stairs storage. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Note the size of anything tall you want to store
- Count the coats and pairs of shoes in daily use
- Make room so the whole space can be measured
Before we leave, we check every drawer and door with you. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. You will know everything works as planned.
Damp coats and shoes put moisture into a closed space. It is best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.
Storage in Kew homes: local notes
About 48% of the homes in the area around Kew went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Kew, 16 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home in Kew is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Zoffany House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For an older house near St Paul's Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. Close to Kew Green? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Kew
Is Kew in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes. Kew is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
I live in a flat in Kew. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Under-stairs cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
What affects the price of under-stairs storage?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
How do I get a quote?
Just tell us about the room on our contact form. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, followed by a written quote.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
What under-stairs storage cannot fix
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:
- Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
- Altering or cutting into the stairs
Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you. How it works.
