Fitted wardrobes in TW1: how it works

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a room too narrow for hinged doors and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall.

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

How our quotes work

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

What’s near Twickenham

In Twickenham, that includes homes near The Cabbage Patch pub, St Richard Reynolds Catholic Primary School and Marble Hill Park, among other places. Nearby too are Richmond upon Thames School (a few minutes’ walk north) and St Richard Reynolds Catholic High School (close by, under half a mile east). For rail, the closest station is Twickenham station, roughly 0.5 miles north-east of the centre. Nearby you’ll also find South Middlesex Hospital (0.6 miles north) and Treaty Centre (1.8 miles north-west). Open spaces near Twickenham include Ham Lands.

Bedroom storage across TW1

If your bedroom in TW1 has a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for storage. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Either way, each piece is fitted to the walls and floor as they are.

In TW1, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 39%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 6 of the 11 places in TW1 with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.

Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so we look at both during the design visit.

Twickenham: Near listed buildings like Church of All Hallows, about 0.5 miles north-east of the centre of Twickenham, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Close to Marble Hill Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.

What we do not do

Not everything around fitted wardrobes is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

With hand painting, you see the colour in your own room’s light before the final coat. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors can be plain, panelled or shaped to suit the room. You choose a colour that matches or contrasts with the room.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.

What it costs

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What to send when you contact us

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • List the things that won’t hang, such as jumpers and shoes
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail, so the rail stays straight.

Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

The time on site depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Do you work in TW1?

Yes, we do. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in TW1.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

How do I get started?

It’s easiest to get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls.
