Under-stairs storage in Ham
About our under-stairs storage in Ham
Where a staircase is open to a living space, the storage under it becomes part of the room. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. We can make plain or panelled fronts, painted to sit with the walls or to stand out. In Ham or anywhere else, the aim is storage that looks considered, not added on. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a staircase with untidy space beneath it and nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags.
Around Ham, where many homes date from the post-war decades, windows are often wide, with radiators below. A window seat there needs a grille or an open front so the heat still reaches the room. Fitted storage can also use the hall, the landing or the space below the stairs.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Questions from Ham
Do you cover homes near Teddington station?
Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.
Is Ham in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes. Ham is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
What is under-stairs storage made from?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, and birch plywood is strong, so it suits drawer boxes and carcasses. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
How much does under-stairs storage cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. It depends on the size of the space, how many drawers and doors you want, and the finish. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
What else we make in Ham
What prompts under-stairs storage in Ham
The most common reason is clutter. Things get pushed to the back, piled on top of each other and forgotten. Purpose-made drawers and shelves give everything its own place, so you can find what you need without emptying the cupboard.
Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:
- A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
- Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
- An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
- A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
If you live near Sudbrook Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.
Before you choose who makes it

- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
From workshop to your room
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Post-war blocks often have shared stairwells and lifts, so under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for each. Tell us about any building rules on lifts or working hours at the design visit.
- You tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store, like coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
- We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards.
- We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
- Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The way to any meters is left clear.
How to prepare
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
How to get a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
Advice
How it is made
Pull-out drawers
Deep drawers on runners let you use the low end of the space without crawling in. Each one is sized for what it will hold. Many designs use a run of drawers stepping down with the stairs.
Moisture-resistant MDF
We use moisture-resistant MDF because it stays stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It’s used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters most.
How we price under-stairs storage
There is no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The width and height of the space
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Before the design visit
These details help when you get in touch:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Approximate measurements of the space
- How you want to use the space
For a quote for under-stairs storage in Ham, send us a few details through our contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, with sizes if you have them. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.
Before and after fitting day
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Think about how your household uses coats and shoes
- Clear the space before the design visit if you can
- Tell us about parking at the design visit
- Let us know if the hall is being decorated
If you chose a hand-painted finish, small marks can be touched in. Keep a little of the paint, or a note of the colour, for later. A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, and small marks often clean off with a damp cloth.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose handle is easy to tighten before it works its way out. If a door drops or a drawer starts to catch, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us what’s happening.
Storage in Ham homes: local notes
About 63% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Ham went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 20% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Ham is partly covered by the Ham Common Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Richmond upon Thames included. Vans bringing furniture to Ham fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.
If you live in a period home close to Ham Christian Centre, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Sudbrook Lodge, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
