Under-stairs storage in Enfield Island Village: what you get
Under-stairs storage isn’t only for houses. Maisonettes, split-level flats and homes with stairs down to a lower floor often have usable space beneath the steps. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections built in our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. The same careful process applies to any home in Enfield Island Village. People normally come to us about a hallway crowded with coats and shoes and stairs open to a room, with clutter on show; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Hallways in newer flats and houses are often short, with doors opening off every side, so there may be only one useful stretch of wall. With many homes around Enfield Island Village built since 2000, the hall is often where we look first. A shallow cupboard can take coats, shoes and the vacuum cleaner without blocking a door.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What happens on fitting day
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have stud walls, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.
- First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need, like coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
- We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards, because they must stay accessible.
- The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
- The storage is made in our workshop and painted in your colour.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The way to any meters is left clear.
Before we arrive
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
How to get a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

How it is made
Moisture-resistant MDF
With wet shoes and coats coming in, a moisture-resistant grade of MDF is a sensible choice. It takes a spray-painted or hand-painted finish well, and it holds its shape in the space under the stairs.
Doors and drawer fronts
We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. The angled fronts are cut to match the stairs, keeping the lines neat.
Questions we’re often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Enfield Island Village?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Is Enfield Island Village in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London, and Enfield Island Village is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. To send them, use our contact form.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.
Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?
Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Either finish can follow a colour already in the hall.
How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?
The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
If you only need a hook or two and a basic shelf, an off-the-shelf option may be enough. Bespoke work earns its place when you want to use the whole space, from the tall end to the lowest corner. We are happy to talk through which suits you at the measuring visit. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.
How we price under-stairs storage
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Spray painting or hand painting
- How big the furniture is
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Before the design visit
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.
