About our wall beds in Enfield Island Village

The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that is sound enough to hold it. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on as solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings. If you are living with a storage wall with a bed inside and a real mattress for visitors, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

In a compact bedroom, the swing of hinged doors can clash with the bed, so the layout and the kind of door are worked out together. Around Enfield Island Village, many homes date from 2000 onwards, and newer bedrooms tend to be on the small side. The space in front is measured as carefully as the wall.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so it helps to sort them out ahead of time. Wall beds are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. You let us know about the room and who the bed is for.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor.
  3. We send a written quote for the bed cabinet and storage, ready to check.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves are made at our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. We show you how the bed works before we leave.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Getting a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Pricing wall beds in Enfield Island Village

The price for your room depends on:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Parking near your home
  • The width and height of the space

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Before the design visit

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:

  • Decide who the bed is mainly for
  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall
  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat

Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. Do not try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

If you know the wall’s construction, mention it. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard need different fixings, and we check it during the design visit too.

Is bespoke worth it?

If you may move soon, a standalone bed you can take with you could suit you better. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before choosing built-in. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves tricky gaps, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It works around service boxing too.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit.

Questions from Enfield Island Village

Is parking a problem for fitting in Enfield Island Village?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you make wall beds for a home in Enfield Island Village?

Yes, Enfield Island Village is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Enfield and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Where other trades come in

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Strengthening or rebuilding a wall
  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Getting consent under your lease

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
