Under-stairs storage in Grahame Park

Making use of awkward spaces in Grahame Park

About 54% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Grahame Park went up since 2000, and about 20% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Grahame Park. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. More than half of the homes in the streets around Grahame Park (about 54%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Homes built since 2000 rarely have much storage, and they tend to have stud walls, so the fixings for under-stairs cupboards are chosen for the board.

If you live in a period home close to St Augustine Grahame Park, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. For a family home near St James' Catholic High School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. For a flat near Mill Hill Broadway station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

How we make under-stairs storage for Grahame Park

When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. A hanging section, shoe drawers and a shelf for keys keep everything off the floor. With a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, it sits quietly in the hall. For a home in Grahame Park, it can make the front door feel far calmer. Most enquiries start with wanting a quiet corner for paperwork and coats and shoes piling up in the hall, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many homes around Grahame Park have been built since 2000, and newer homes often have little built-in storage. Halls, landings and the space beneath the stairs are where fitted storage can help. Plasterboard stud walls are common, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the fronts a very even surface. It is applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF can be cut and shaped cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a staircase. The moisture-resistant grade we use is stable and paints well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Grahame Park

I live near Mill Hill Broadway station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is Grahame Park in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes, we work across Barnet, Grahame Park included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.

Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?

In many homes it is possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. New sockets or lights are for your electrician, and we leave a route for the cables.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. It can match the walls, the stairs or the woodwork, so it looks like part of the house.

How much does under-stairs storage cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, use our contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf units are made for flat walls and square corners, but the space under a staircase rarely offers either. A ready-made unit tends to leave gaps at the slope and wasted space at the back. Bespoke storage is designed and cut to the shape of your stairs. It costs more than something off the shelf, and what you gain is the space a standard unit cannot reach. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. It is then assembled and fixed in the room.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What affects the price in Grahame Park

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Helping us understand the room

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Your postcode and the borough

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about the space under your stairs.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Advice

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Empty the cupboard so we can measure every corner
  • Count the coats and pairs of shoes in daily use
  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

Decorating around the storage is for your decorator, and it is best to protect the new paintwork while they work. Tape on fresh paint can pull it off, so keep it away from the doors and drawers. Should you have a question about the storage, fill in our short enquiry form and we will help.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening a screw early stops a small looseness becoming a problem. If a door drops or a drawer starts to catch, use our contact form and tell us what’s happening.
