About our fitted cupboards in Grahame Park

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage for towels and bedding and using the full height of a room; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Newer homes often have plain spaces left as they are: a recess beside the stairs, a gap by a window, an empty cupboard. Many homes around Grahame Park date from 2000 onwards, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. The layout inside is planned to use the full depth.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Questions we’re often asked

How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Grahame Park?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Mill Hill Broadway station?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Flats, leases and landlords

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber, ideally before fitting day.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the design.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
  5. We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

What affects the price in Grahame Park

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The internal fittings
  • Parking near your home

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, fill in our short enquiry form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

When you need someone else

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Any plumbing in a utility room
  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Any gas work around the boiler

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
