How we make under-stairs storage for Canons Park
In a narrow hallway, the stairs may offer the only spare room for coats and shoes. We can make a coat section with a rail or hooks, shoe drawers and a small shelf for keys and post. With a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, it sits quietly in the hall. For a home in Canons Park, it can make the front door feel far calmer. Most enquiries start with no room for a small desk or a place to work and storage that doesn’t match the hallway; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. Around Canons Park, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, it is worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

From workshop to your room
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
- At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Ask for a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Advice
Common questions about under-stairs storage
Is Canons Park in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes, Canons Park is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Harrow and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Canons Park?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?
Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.
There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
- New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
- Plastering and decorating around the new storage
Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

The problems under-stairs storage solve
In a smaller home, every bit of space counts. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It often eases the load on every other cupboard too.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- No room for a small desk or a place to work
- A staircase with untidy space beneath it
- A sloping corner nobody can reach
- A fuse board that is hard to get to
The wider area includes historic houses such as Headstone Manor, about 3 miles west. If your own home is a period one, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
