From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about the space under your stairs.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the space, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed. Take your time to look through it.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Ask for a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

How we make under-stairs storage for Green Street Green

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. People usually come to us about open space under the stairs that collects clutter and space under the stairs that’s hard to use, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Green Street Green, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Period walls are rarely flat, and floors are often out of level. Ready-made units leave gaps that need filler pieces. We scribe each under-stairs cupboard to follow the walls and the stairs, and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Why choose us

  • Work across the whole of London
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
  • Scribed to uneven walls

Flats, conversions and lettings

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Green Street Green

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chelsfield station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Green Street Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Either finish can follow a colour already in the hall.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, normally behind its own door. Meter readers and engineers need access, so we never box them in.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Green Street Green

In a smaller home, every bit of space counts. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It also takes pressure off the other cupboards in the house.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall

Close to Hewitt's Chalk Bank? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.
