Loft Storage in Green Street Green
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on loft storage in Green Street Green starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Needing storage in a loft office
- Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
- An empty dormer that could hold shelves

Loft storage for homes in Green Street Green
We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. The conversion itself isn’t our work, and conversions come under Building Regulations. Once the room is finished, we can design storage to suit it. If you have a converted loft in Green Street Green, the design visit is the first step. Most enquiries start with a dormer that isn’t being used and a boarded loft with no proper shelving; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Much of the housing around Green Street Green is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Bespoke loft storage or ready-made?
For simple storage in a boarded loft, ready-made shelving can do the job. Bespoke work makes sense in a converted loft room, where the storage is part of the room. We will give you an honest view at the design visit. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Questions from Green Street Green
Is parking a problem for fitting in Green Street Green?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
I live near Chelsfield station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Does eaves storage affect the insulation?
It shouldn’t, if it is designed properly. The storage is planned around the insulation and ventilation behind the knee wall. If you have concerns about what’s already behind the eaves, it is worth asking whoever converted the loft.
What happens when you come to measure?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.
What materials do you use for loft storage?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

What prompts loft storage in Green Street Green
A loft room used as an office or guest room often needs storage too. Storage in the eaves leaves the main floor clear.
Requests we hear often include:
- Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
- A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
- A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
- Space under the eaves going to waste
Close to Hewitt's Chalk Bank? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
What to check before you book
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
What happens on fitting day
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Eaves cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place.
- You get in touch with some details about the loft room, whether it’s a converted room or a boarded space.
- At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up.
- A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed. You can ask us about any of it.
- We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope.
- We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the doors and drawers checked with you.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Starting with a design visit
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.
Advice
What it is made from
Plinths and scribe strips
Loft floors are often out of level. A plinth or adjustable feet let us set the storage level, so the doors and drawers run true.
Spray-painted finish
For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It is applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.
Tips worth knowing
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:
- Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
- Choose a calm colour for the loft
- Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
- Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. Keep a note of the colour for later. If anything isn’t right with the storage, tell us about the room on our contact form and we will talk it through.
Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Store tools in a box, not loose against the doors. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.
Green Street Green homes and loft storage
In the area around Green Street Green, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 45%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Green Street Green, Historic England’s list includes Chelsfield Hall Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile south-east, and Denbarn Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home in Green Street Green is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. If your children go to Green Street Green Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.
