Under-stairs storage in Grove Park

Under-stairs storage in Grove Park

Under the stairs is where so much ends up, from coats and shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Our under-stairs storage is planned around what you need to store, with pull-out drawers, cupboards or a combination of the two. In Grove Park, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. People typically come to us about an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall and nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Around Grove Park, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

What it is made from

Pull-out drawers

The back of an under-stairs space is hard to reach, so drawers that slide out are often the answer. Everything is in view when the drawer is open. They can hold shoes, the vacuum or cleaning things.

Doors and drawer fronts

A door for the meter or fuse board can match the rest of the fronts. It opens wide so readings and checks are easy. Around it, the other fronts can be drawers, doors or a mix.

The problems under-stairs storage solve

The low end of the space is typically the problem. It is too low to stand in and too deep to reach into. Drawers that slide out on runners turn that tricky corner into useful storage.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out

If your home is one of the older houses near St Augustine's Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store, like coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The way to any meters is left clear.

Preparing the room

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Is parking a problem for fitting in Grove Park?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

I live near Grove Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

Could the space under my stairs take a desk?

Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there’s enough height at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. New sockets or lights are for your electrician, and we leave a route for the cables.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Grove Park homes and under-stairs storage

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Grove Park were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 61%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Grove Park, Historic England’s list includes Baring Hall Hotel and associated stable block (Grade II), under half a mile south. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 61% of homes in the area around Grove Park date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Interwar houses normally have a straight flight of stairs with a cupboard below, often holding the meters or the fuse board, which must stay accessible.

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
  • Look for meters, a fuse board or pipes before we visit
  • Make room so the whole space can be measured

Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is usually all they need. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.

Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Store tools in a box or bag, not loose against the doors. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

When you need someone else

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
