Under-stairs storage in Sundridge, Bromley
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on under-stairs storage in Sundridge starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

- A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
Under-stairs storage for your home in Sundridge
FAQs: under-stairs storage in Sundridge
Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Sundridge?
Yes. Sundridge is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Sundridge?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?
How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The storage is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We know the hall is a busy route, so we keep it as clear as possible.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
What happens when you come to measure?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?
The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, so it suits the doors and fronts, while birch plywood gives strength to the drawers and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
Under-stairs storage in Sundridge
Under the stairs is where so much ends up, from coats and shoes to the vacuum cleaner. We design under-stairs storage around the things you actually want to keep there, whether that is pull-out drawers, a run of cupboards or a mix of both. In Sundridge, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Most enquiries start with a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and a hallway crowded with coats and shoes, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Not every home has a loft conversion, a bay or a cupboard under the stairs, but almost every home has somewhere storage could go. Whatever kind of home yours is in Sundridge, we start by looking at what’s there. The storage is made in our workshop and fitted in your home.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

What happens on fitting day
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.
- It starts when you get in touch about the space under your stairs.
- At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
- A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed. Take your time to look through it.
- We make the drawers, doors and carcasses in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use.
Before we arrive
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Tips worth knowing
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
- Plan decorating around the fitting
- Tell us about anything bulky that needs to fit
- Mention any parking rules on your street
Decorating around the storage is for your decorator, and it is best to protect the new paintwork while they work. Masking tape can lift fresh paint, so it shouldn’t go on the new finish. If anything isn’t right, tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll talk it through.
Closing drawers fully helps keep the runners and fronts in good order. Overfilled drawers put strain on the runners, so it pays to sort them now and then. Wipe up any spills, particularly near the floor, before they dry.
What we don’t do
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
- Plastering and decorating around the new storage
- Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
Walls are rarely flat and floors rarely level, in older homes especially. We use scribe strips at the walls and a plinth at the floor to take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.
Doors and drawer fronts
A door for the meter or fuse board can match the rest of the fronts. It opens fully so the meter stays easy to read. The rest of the fronts can be doors, drawers or both.
Why bespoke in Sundridge?
Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.
Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Storage in Sundridge homes: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Sundridge, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 33%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Sundridge, Historic England’s list includes Quernmore Secondary School (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west, and Hollow Bottom Cottage (Grade II), under half a mile west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. All of London, Bromley included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Sundridge. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
The wider area includes historic houses like Bromley Palace, about 0.9 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. If you live in a flat close to Sundridge Park station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Elmstead Wood? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
