Under-stairs storage for your home in Lewisham
About our under-stairs storage in Lewisham
Under-stairs storage isn’t only for houses. A maisonette, a split-level flat or a staircase down to a lower floor can all leave space underneath. The parts we make in our workshop are sized to get through the doors and hallways on the way in. Wherever your home is in Lewisham, the process is the same. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are wanting a quiet corner for paperwork and storage that doesn’t match the hallway.
Whether your home in Lewisham is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, there is normally a space that could work harder. Fitted storage can make it useful, with drawers, shelves, hanging or a seat depending on the space. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. We plan the details of the day at the measuring visit. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- It starts when you get in touch with a few details about the space.
- At the design visit we measure under the stairs and plan the drawers and doors with you.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish.
- Your storage is built in our workshop and painted to the colour you chose. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls. Any meters stay easy to reach.
How to prepare

- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Arranging a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Making use of tricky spaces in Lewisham
About 37% of the homes in the streets around Lewisham went up before 1919, and about 32% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 45 entries within half a mile of the centre of Lewisham. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. About 47% of households in the streets around Lewisham live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
Close to Ladywell Fields? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For an older house near St Stephen's Church, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. Queen's House, about 1.4 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Flats, leases and landlords
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the design visit.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.
Where other trades come in
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Moving gas pipes under the stairs
- Changing where a meter sits, which isn’t carpentry
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

When is bespoke worth it?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A standard unit knows nothing about your meter or fuse board. Fitted in front of one, it can make access tricky for readings and safety checks. Bespoke storage is planned around them from the start. Recesses, sloping ceilings and tricky corners are where ready-made furniture struggles most, and most homes have one somewhere. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, then set it out in the quote.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Lewisham
My home in Lewisham is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
I live near Lewisham station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover the whole of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
How long does the fitting take?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk about it at the design visit.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
