How we make under-stairs storage for Lewisham
In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. Fronts can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. Most enquiries start with an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall and the low end of the space going to waste, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch and let us know what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
- We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
- A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
What affects the price in Lewisham
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

How to get a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Under-stairs storage across Lewisham: local notes
Across Lewisham, including New Cross, St Johns and Deptford, most homes have a corner or recess that could do more. It could be beneath the stairs, in a window bay, in a hallway or in the eaves. The furniture is made for the space you have.
The biggest shares of homes in Lewisham were built before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Of the 22 places we have local pages for in Lewisham, 6 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones, so let us know about parking at the design visit, and we will plan the van around it.
Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
New Cross: Queen's House, about 1.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Public Library, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.
Boards, parts and paint
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall, closing the gap a standard unit would leave. They help the storage look as though it was always there. The plinth at the bottom does the same job at the floor.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It is used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where the finish is most on show.
What affects the cost of under-stairs storage
To work out the quote, we look at:
- How big the furniture is
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Getting in touch
These details help when you contact us:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf units are made for flat walls and square corners, and the space under a staircase is neither. A ready-made unit tends to leave gaps at the slope and wasted space at the back. Storage made for the space follows the angle of the stairs and uses its full depth. It costs more than something off the shelf, and what you gain is the space a standard unit can’t reach.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
Questions we’re often asked
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
How much does under-stairs storage cost?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Drawers usually involve more work than plain shelving, and the finish makes a difference too. We set it all out in a written quote.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Can you match the storage to my hallway?
Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.
Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?
Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there is enough height at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.
Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?
Often a mix works best. Drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We’ll suggest a layout when we visit.
