When you need someone else

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

About our under-stairs storage in New Cross

Not every staircase is in a house. Maisonettes, split-level flats and homes with stairs down to a lower floor often have usable space beneath the steps. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections made at our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. Wherever your home is in New Cross, the process is the same. Most enquiries start with needing a compact spot for a laptop and nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and so do the tricky corners, from bays and stairs to halls and eaves. The furniture is made for the space as it is. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay accessible.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Before fitting day, we check the route in not just the room, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. First you let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them.
  2. We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and discuss the design, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made at our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.

Before we arrive

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Advice

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

Standard storage is built for a level floor and a square space, but the space under a staircase rarely offers either. Boxed units usually leave awkward gaps under the slope and dead space behind. Bespoke storage is designed and cut to the shape of your stairs. It costs more than something off the shelf, and what you gain is the space a standard unit can’t reach. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, which may not suit what you need to store. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Fitted storage in New Cross

About 43% of the homes in the streets around New Cross went up before 1919, and about 19% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 30 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of New Cross. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in the area around New Cross, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1.5 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. For a family home near Myatt Garden Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. If you live in a flat close to New Cross station, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in New Cross

I live in a flat in New Cross. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in New Cross?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

How long will you be in my home?

That depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. The design visit gives us what we need to plan it.

How much will my under-stairs cupboard cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Pull-out drawers

The back of an under-stairs space is hard to reach, so drawers that slide out are often the answer. Everything is in view when the drawer is open. They can hold shoes, the vacuum or cleaning things.

Plinths and scribe strips

Walls are rarely flat and floors rarely level, in older homes especially. We use scribe strips at the walls and a plinth at the floor to take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.
