Built-in bookshelves in Grove Park, Lewisham
In Grove Park, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. We design your built-in bookcase at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.
- Empty alcoves that could hold books
- Low shelves children can reach
- Room for a record collection

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Grove Park
Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. A mix often works best. People normally come to us about books with nowhere left to go and bookshelves in keeping with an older house; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In an area like Grove Park, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for built-in bookshelves. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned at the measuring visit.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
When you need someone else
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Structural changes, such as taking out a chimney breast
- Relocating radiators or pipework
Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What it is made from
- Spray-painted finish
- Cupboards below
- Fixed and adjustable shelves
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
From workshop to your room
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- The sections are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
Arranging a design visit
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve
Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall for far more space than a standalone bookcase.
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
- Shelving behind a desk for books and files
- Room for a record collection
- Shelving that frames a window
If your children go to Haberdashers' Aske's Knights Academy or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Grove Park
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Grove Park were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 61%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Grove Park, Historic England’s list includes Baring Hall Hotel and associated stable block (Grade II), less than half a mile south. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home in Grove Park is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
Close to Chinbrook Meadows? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If you live in a flat close to Grove Park station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Grove Park
Is Grove Park in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes, Grove Park is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lewisham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.
Do you cover homes near Grove Park station?
Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.
Can my walls take a full bookcase?
We check how the wall is built at the measuring visit. We use fixings that suit the wall, from solid brick to studwork, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.
What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?
It depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The bookcase is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?
It needs planning. We leave space so heat is not trapped. Moving a radiator is a plumber’s job.
Looking after your furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
- Measure your tallest and deepest books
- Estimate how many metres of books you have
- Tell us if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, lift books onto the shelves rather than pushing them across, to avoid marking the new finish.
Use mats under plants and vases on painted shelves to avoid water marks. Wipe up spills straight away.
