Fitted wardrobes across Lewisham: what to expect
We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in the colour you choose. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. Most enquiries start with wardrobes that are full to bursting and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.
- You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
- At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you.
- You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
- Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.
What goes into your quote
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Why work with us
- A spray or hand-painted finish
- Every quote follows a design visit
- Every London borough and the City of London covered
- Scribed to uneven walls
Arranging a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across Lewisham
We make fitted wardrobes for homes across Lewisham, in New Cross, St Johns and Deptford and beyond. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.
In Lewisham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 6 of the 22 places in Lewisham with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, so it helps to mention parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the van around it.
We cover the whole of London, so homes in Lewisham are well within our area. If you are unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.
New Cross: If your home is one of the older houses near St James's Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Public Library, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Flats, leases and landlords
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. We set fitted wardrobes level and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
What to check before you book
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
What we do not do
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
- Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Lewisham
Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom, or won’t go up the stairs at all. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.
Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:
- Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- A bedroom that never feels tidy
- Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Questions we’re often asked
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.
Is it possible to have storage over the bed?
Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that’s often wasted, with wardrobes at the sides and cupboards overhead. We measure the bed and the room at the design visit.
How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?
The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. If you are in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front. We talk through both at the measuring visit.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The fitting depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The wardrobes are made in our workshop first before we come to fit them.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
