Under-Stairs Storage in Hounslow

We make under-stairs storage for homes in Hounslow, designed around the room you have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
  • Space under the stairs that’s hard to use
  • Storage that does not match the hallway

Where other trades come in

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • Changing where a meter sits, which is not carpentry

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Hounslow

Every staircase has its own shape. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. It’s the part of the job a boxed unit simply can’t manage. Typical reasons to get in touch are no room for a small desk or a place to work and struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Hounslow, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. It’s done in our workshop, before the storage comes to your home. The colour is agreed with you.

Pull-out drawers

Some pull-outs are tall, with a rail for coats or room for a vacuum. Shorter drawers lower down suit shoes and bags. We plan the mix at the design visit.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards.
  3. We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The way to any meters is left clear.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Getting a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Hounslow

I live near Sunbury station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hounslow?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Drawers typically involve more work than plain shelving, and the finish makes a difference too. We set it all out in a quote in writing.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Why bespoke in Hounslow?

Off-the-shelf units are made for flat walls and square corners, and the space under a staircase is neither. Boxed units normally leave awkward gaps under the slope and dead space behind. Bespoke storage is designed and cut to the shape of your stairs. It costs more than something off the shelf, and what you gain is the space a standard unit cannot reach. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
