Under-stairs storage in Woodlands
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
About our under-stairs storage in Woodlands
Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. Our designs keep a clear way to them, often behind their own door, so you gain storage without losing access. At the design visit in Woodlands, we note what’s there and design around it. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a sloping corner nobody can reach and a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out.
An interwar house typically has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. Around Woodlands, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Woodlands
The low end of the space is normally the problem. It’s too low to stand in and too deep to reach into. Drawers that slide out on runners turn that tricky corner into useful storage.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
- Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
- A low corner too deep to reach into
- Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
If you live in a flat close to Isleworth station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
How fitting works for under-stairs storage
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going.
- You get in touch with a few details and, if you like, a sketch.
- We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space.
- A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed. Take your time to look through it.
- Your storage is built in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use.
Before fitting day
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
Starting with a design visit
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?
Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

Under-stairs storage in Woodlands: local notes
About 32% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Woodlands went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 25% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Woodlands include Gumley House (convent) (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles east, and Garvin House (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Hounslow is no exception. Where a street in Woodlands is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
For an older house near Church of St Mary the Virgin, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. Syon House, about 1.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

Where other trades come in
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Any work on gas pipes or appliances
- Changing where a meter sits, which is not carpentry
- Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out

Common questions about under-stairs storage
Is parking a problem for fitting in Woodlands?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Woodlands?
Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London, and Woodlands is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
How is under-stairs storage priced?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Drawers normally involve more work than plain shelving, and the finish makes a difference too. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.
What happens when you come to measure?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Can you match the storage to my hallway?
Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.
