Questions we are often asked

I live in a flat in Isleworth. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Isleworth station?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

How do I get started?

Just drop us a line using the contact form. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Isleworth

When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. A hanging section, shoe drawers and a shelf for keys keep everything off the floor. Painted in a colour you choose, it reads as part of the house rather than a piece of furniture. It’s a small change that makes a busy hallway feel ordered. People normally come to us about cleaning things with no proper home and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, floors, walls and ceilings vary from one home to the next. Each piece is scribed to the wall and set level, whatever the room is like. The finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, almost like a factory finish. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF can be cut and shaped cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a staircase. The moisture-resistant grade we use is stable and paints well. It is the main material for the parts you see.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Isleworth

Many people get in touch after digging through clutter to reach a meter or the fuse board. Good storage can keep these in clear reach behind their own door, while the rest of the space is put to proper use.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • Space under the stairs that is hard to use

Syon House, about 0.9 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Fitting day, step by step

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You tell us about the space under the stairs.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Preparing the room

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Arranging a design visit

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Isleworth homes and under-stairs storage

In the area around Isleworth, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 34%) and the years since 2000 (about 22%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Isleworth, Historic England’s list includes Syon Park Boathouse the Pavilion (Grade I), about 0.5 miles east, and Gumley House (convent) (Grade II*), under half a mile south-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 46% of households in the neighbourhood around Isleworth live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of All Saints, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. For a flat near Isleworth station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.
