Questions we’re often asked
I live near Chiswick station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.
I live in a flat in Strand-on-the-Green. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
How long will you be in my home?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We will talk about it during the design visit.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Under-stairs storage in Strand-on-the-Green: what you get
Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are open space under the stairs that collects clutter and cleaning things with no proper home.
With a large share of homes around Strand-on-the-Green built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting day works
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.
- First you let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them.
- We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and go through the design, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
- We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are made at our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Clear the area where the furniture is going

What it is made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It is used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters most.
Plinths and scribe strips
In older houses, walls and floors are seldom straight. We use scribe strips at the walls and a plinth at the floor to take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Strand-on-the-Green
In a smaller home, every bit of space counts. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It often eases the load on every other cupboard too.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- The low end of the space going to waste
- A fuse board that’s hard to get to
- A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
- A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
Living in a block of flats near Chiswick station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Practical tips
The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Note the size of anything tall you want to store
- Plan decorating around the fitting
- Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
- Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
When you load the drawers, put the heaviest things low and towards the front. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. We size the shelves for what you said you’d store, so stick to that and they’ll stay straight.
Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. A loose handle is easy to tighten before it works its way out. If a door drops or a drawer starts to catch, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us what’s happening.
