Window Seats in Hounslow
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on window seats in Hounslow starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- A ready-made bench that does not fit the bay
- A period room that needs furniture to suit it
- Toys spread across a bedroom floor
Window seats designed for your room
Window seats in Hounslow
Lots of period homes across London have sash windows. Under a sash, the seat is set below the cill so the window can still be used. Where there are working shutters, the seat must leave room for them to fold back. These details are measured when we visit your home in Hounslow. If you’re living with a sash window with space beneath it going to waste and no space for toys and games, window seats made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Hounslow, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

What window seats can’t fix
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:
- Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
- Seat cushions, which you source separately
- New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
Materials and parts
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish

How it is made
Doors and drawer fronts
The fronts of a window seat are what you see most. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. A radiator grille can be built into the front.
Pull-out drawers
Pull-out drawers bring everything into view. They’re often easier for children than a lid. We make the boxes from birch plywood for strength.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
FAQs: window seats in Hounslow
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Sunbury station?
Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hounslow?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
How long does it take to fit a window seat?
How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. The seat is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as possible.
From workshop to your room
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- It starts when you get in touch about a window seat. Say how you’d like to use it, if you know.
- We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the seat.
- A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed. Read it through and ask if anything is unclear.
- Your window seat is made in our workshop, shaped to the window.
- The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion.
Before we arrive
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Arranging a design visit
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Advice
Bespoke window seats or ready-made?
Ready-made seats rarely allow for a radiator. Placed in front of a radiator, they block the warmth. A bespoke seat has a grille or open front designed in, so the heat can reach the room. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall typically ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Hounslow homes and window seats
Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up about 36% of the housing in the streets around Hounslow, with about 31% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 31% of households in the area around Hounslow live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Many London terraces have a bay or sash windows, good places for a seat with storage. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, the rest of London included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Hounslow. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.
If you live in a period home close to Church of St Dunstan, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. Living in a block of flats near Sunbury station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For a family home near Meadhurst Primary School, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.
