Fitted wardrobes in Kew
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it to help avoid condensation and mould. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. People typically come to us about clothes with nowhere proper to go and a bedroom that never feels tidy, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Kew, plenty of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for fitted wardrobes.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Kew
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Kew were built before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 73 entries within half a mile of the centre of Kew. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Richmond upon Thames has its own. If your road in Kew falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.
If you live in a period home close to St Paul's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For a family home near Grove Park Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
Kew is part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, about 4 miles south-west of Twickenham. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Kew included. Kew is one of 19 places on our list for Richmond upon Thames.

Monocotyledons and Cryptogams (0.6 miles west). Open spaces near Kew include Kew Gardens Lake and Duke's Hollow.
Fitting day, step by step
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it is useful to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch and let us know what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
- A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
- We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
Before we arrive
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Where other trades come in
Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
What it is made from
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Hinged or sliding doors
- Hand-painted finish
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
Is it time for fitted wardrobes?
Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom, or won’t go up the stairs at all. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.
Requests we hear often include:
- Not enough hanging space
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
- An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
Close to Kew Green? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.
Before you choose who makes it
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
How it’s made
Birch plywood
Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood keeps them flat.
Hanging rails
Rails are placed so the top one is within easy reach. Shelves above the rails hold things used less often.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Questions we are often asked
How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Kew?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
My home in Kew is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?
Yes, with ventilation planned in. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.
