Under-Stairs Storage in Richmond

In Richmond, we design under-stairs storage around the room you actually have. We design your under-stairs cupboard at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can use our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

About our under-stairs storage in Richmond

Where the space under the stairs opens onto a room, a compact desk can fit beneath it. We can build a desk with shelves above and a drawer or two below. If you’d like a socket or a light, your electrician fits it and we plan the furniture around it. We’ll look at whether it suits your stairs when we visit in Richmond. If your home has needing a compact spot for a laptop and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A large share of the homes around Richmond were built before 1919, and older houses have plenty of odd corners: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Do you cover homes near Richmond station?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.

I live in a flat in Richmond. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

How many days does the fitting take?

That depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The design visit gives us what we need to plan it.

What affects the price of under-stairs storage?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a quote in writing once we have measured up.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done in your home, once the storage is fitted. Small marks are simple to touch in later, which suits a busy hallway.

Pull-out drawers

A tall pull-out drawer can hold coats on a rail or a vacuum cleaner standing up. Shorter drawers lower down suit shoes and bags. The design visit is where we agree the mix.

Could you do it yourself?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Storage in Richmond homes: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 54% of the housing in the streets around Richmond, with about 17% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Richmond is in the Richmond Hill Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. The share of homes built before 1919 around Richmond, about 54%, is well above the figure for Richmond upon Thames as a whole, about 38%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of under-stairs cupboards.

If you live in a period home close to The Vineyard Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If your children go to The Vineyard School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Near listed buildings like The Wick and Wick Cottage, less than half a mile south of the centre of Richmond, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Richmond is about 2 miles west of Twickenham, within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Whether your home in Richmond is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We list Richmond among 19 places we cover in Richmond upon Thames.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You get in touch and tell us a little about the space under your stairs, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
  2. We visit to measure the space and talk through the design with you, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to read through.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
