Under-stairs storage in Teddington
Under-stairs storage in Teddington: what you get
When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. A hanging section, shoe drawers and a shelf for keys keep everything off the floor. With a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, it sits quietly in the hall. It’s a small change that makes a busy hallway feel ordered. If your home has storage that doesn’t match the hallway and a sloping corner nobody can reach, under-stairs cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are typically solid brick, which can be cold, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. That matters around Teddington, where a large share of the homes are that old. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What happens on fitting day
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch with some details and, if you like, a sketch.
- We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
- Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Take your time to look through it.
- Your storage is made in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
Starting with a design visit

Flats, conversions and lettings
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.
What we do not do
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Structural changes to the staircase itself
- Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
- Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
What goes into it
- Birch plywood
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Pull-out drawers
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Bespoke drawers are made to the depth you have, so the back of the space is used too. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Questions from Teddington
My home in Teddington is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Does a conservation area in or near Teddington affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?
Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, normally behind its own door. Meter readers and engineers need access, so we never box them in.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
What affects the cost of under-stairs storage
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The overall size of the piece
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.
What to send when you contact us
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

About 46% of the homes in the area around Teddington went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. About 46% of homes in the area around Teddington were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures.
