Why bespoke in Kew?
For simple storage in a boarded loft, ready-made shelving can do the job. Bespoke work makes sense in a converted loft room, where the storage is part of the room. We will give you an honest view during the design visit. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Why us?
- Finished by spray or by hand
- Built around your room
- Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
- Scribed to uneven walls

About our loft storage in Kew
Many loft rooms are bedrooms, and storage for clothes is the first need. A wardrobe under the slope, knee-wall drawers and dormer shelves make a complete set. Designed as one, they give the room calm, consistent lines. We design them around what you need to store in Kew. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are unused space in a dormer and seasonal things cluttering the loft room.
A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. That matters around Kew, where a large share of the homes are that old. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Questions from Kew
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Kew?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Kew?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you work outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.
How long will the loft storage fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Every part is made in our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?
A good design avoids that. We look behind the knee wall at the measuring visit and plan the storage so air can still move. We do not alter insulation or vents.
How much does loft storage cost?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Drawers in the knee wall typically involve more work than simple cupboards, and the finish matters too. We set it all out in a quote in writing.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

How fitting works for loft storage
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so eaves cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You get in touch and let us know about the loft and the stairs up to it.
- We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn. Tell us about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
- We send a quote in writing.
- Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Advice
When you need someone else
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Insulation or ventilation work behind the eaves
- Loft conversions, which we don’t carry out
- Approval for structural changes

Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It is used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.
Fitted storage in Kew
About 48% of the homes in the area around Kew went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Kew, 16 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Richmond upon Thames are set locally. Where a street in Kew is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Tell us what the parking is like during the design visit.
For a family home near Grove Park Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live in a period home close to St Paul's Church, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even. Close to Kew Green?
