About our under-stairs storage in North Woolwich

Where a staircase is open to a living space, the storage under it becomes part of the room. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. Fronts can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. In North Woolwich or anywhere else, the aim is storage that looks considered, not added on. If your home has a fuse board that’s hard to get to and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Hallways in newer flats and houses are often short, with doors opening off every side, which leaves little wall for storage. Around North Woolwich, many homes were built since 2000, so that is worth planning for. A shallow cupboard can take coats, shoes and the vacuum cleaner without blocking a door.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in North Woolwich

After a hallway is redecorated, an old, tired cupboard under the stairs can stand out. Storage made for the space and painted to suit the hall finishes the job. Decorating is for your decorator, so it is useful to tell us your plans early.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show

Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary Magdalene, about 0.6 miles south of the centre of North Woolwich, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

How fitting day works

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber, ideally before fitting day.

  1. First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need, such as coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
  2. At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted, because they must stay accessible.
  3. We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop and painted in your colour.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

How to prepare

How to get a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Do you cover homes near Woolwich Dockyard station?

Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

My home in North Woolwich is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Under-stairs cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What affects the price of under-stairs storage?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Note the size of anything tall you want to store
  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit

If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Masking tape can lift fresh paint, so it shouldn’t go on the new finish. Should you have a question about the storage, message us from the contact page and we’ll help.

Damp coats and shoes put moisture into a closed space. It’s best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and leave the door open for a while after a wet day if the cupboard feels damp.

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF can be cut and shaped cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a staircase. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which stays stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.

Plinths and scribe strips

The floor under a staircase is rarely perfectly level. A plinth or adjustable feet let us set the storage level, so the doors and drawers run true.

Flats, leases and landlords

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease.
