Under-stairs storage in Royal Docks

About our under-stairs storage in Royal Docks

We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes that carry weight, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. The finish is sprayed or hand-painted, and then the storage is fitted in your home in Royal Docks. If you’re living with an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall and a staircase with untidy space beneath it, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A large number of homes around Royal Docks date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer developments. Boilers, cylinders and consumer units often sit in a hall cupboard, and any new storage keeps their access and ventilation. Shallow cupboards suit narrow halls, so the hallway still feels open.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Royal Docks?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Royal Docks?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How do I get a quote?

Just drop us a line using the contact form. Rough sizes and a few pictures help, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

How many days does the fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It’s something we discuss at the measuring visit.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Why bespoke in Royal Docks?

If you only need a hook or two and a basic shelf, an off-the-shelf option may be enough. Bespoke storage makes sense when you want every part of the space working, not just the easy part. We’re happy to talk through which suits you during the design visit. Large standalone pieces don’t always fit the lift or the hallway, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.

Why us?

  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Saturdays by arrangement
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight

Take a look at our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

From workshop to your room

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Corners and door frames are covered as well. The sections are assembled in the room.

  1. It starts when you contact us about the space under your stairs.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the space.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the drawers, doors and carcasses in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use.

Arranging a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Royal Docks

Some people simply want somewhere for coats and shoes. A coat and shoe section under the stairs keeps the floor clear and the door easy to open, and the family has an obvious place to put things.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags

Queen's House, about 2.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
