Stratford Under-Stairs Storage

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on under-stairs storage in Stratford starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Space under the stairs that’s hard to use
  • A fuse board that is hard to get to
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out

Under-stairs storage for your home in Stratford

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Stratford?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Stratford?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London, and Stratford is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it sits quietly in the hall.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How much does under-stairs storage cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Drawers usually involve more work than plain shelving, and the finish makes a difference too. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Stratford

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. If your home has coats and shoes piling up in the hall and open space under the stairs that collects clutter, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Many homes around Stratford date from 2000 onwards, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What we do not do

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Structural changes to the staircase itself
  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances
  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Note the things that need a home under the stairs
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Plan decorating around the fitting

When you load the drawers, put the heaviest things low and towards the front. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. We size the shelves for what you said you’d store, so it’s worth keeping to that plan.

Sharp tools and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Store tools in a box or bag, not loose against the doors. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

What you see of the storage is mostly the doors and drawer fronts. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the hall. Each one follows the line of the stairs above.

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It’s applied in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.

Is bespoke worth it?

A standard unit knows nothing about your meter or fuse board. Put in the wrong place, it can block the access meter readers and engineers need. Bespoke storage is planned around them from the start. Ready-made units fixed to stud walls are often held by fixings that don’t suit the board. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board, and heavy pieces can stand on the floor.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Why choose us

  • Designed for the room you have
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
  • We work across all London boroughs

Making use of awkward spaces in Stratford

Homes built since 2000 make up about 55% of the housing in the area around Stratford, with about 19% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Stratford, St John's Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Stratford. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. About 67% of households in the area around Stratford live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The Theatre Royal, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near West Ham Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. For a flat near Stratford (London) station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

What happens on fitting day

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. It starts with some details from you about the space.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you’ll use the space.
  3. We send a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
