Under-stairs storage in Canning Town, Newham

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on under-stairs storage in Canning Town starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach

Honest limits

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Pull-out drawers
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

Under-stairs storage for homes in Canning Town

In a narrow hallway, the stairs may offer the only spare room for coats and shoes. A hanging section, shoe drawers and a shelf for keys keep everything off the floor. With a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, it sits quietly in the hall. It is a small change that makes a busy hallway feel ordered. People typically come to us about cleaning things with no proper home and nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Floors in newer homes are often finished and easy to mark, so they’re protected while storage is fitted. Around Canning Town, many homes date from 2000 onwards, and stud walls there take fixings chosen for the board. Skirting can be scribed around, or the storage can sit on its own plinth.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Looking after your furniture

These points come up often when people plan under-stairs storage. They help before and after fitting:

  • Let us know if the hall is being decorated
  • Note the things that need a home under the stairs
  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall

We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. That way, nothing is left for you to sort out later.

Keep the way to the meter or fuse board clear. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. A dedicated door makes this easy to keep up.

Fitted storage in Canning Town

In the streets around Canning Town, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 38%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 24%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Canning Town include Warehouse K (Grade II), under half a mile south, and Warehouse W (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Newham is no exception. If your road in Canning Town falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what the parking is like during the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near Custom House station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For an older house near St Cedd's Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Canning Town

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Canning Town?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Canning Town?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How do I get a quote for under-stairs storage in Canning Town?

Just tell us about the room on our contact form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Do you need under-stairs storage in Canning Town?

Most people get in touch because the space has become a dumping ground. Under the stairs is easy to fill and hard to sort, with things pushed to the back and lost in the dark. Well-planned drawers and shelves give each thing a home, so you can find what you need without emptying the cupboard.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall
  • A fuse board that’s hard to get to
  • Space under the stairs that is hard to use

The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 2.7 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.

  1. You tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store.
  2. At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

How it’s made

Doors and drawer fronts

What you see of the storage is mostly the doors and drawer fronts. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the hall. Their tops follow the angle of the stairs.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It is a good choice for drawer boxes and carcasses that carry weight. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
